Running president of the European Academy of Sciences, director of the Associated Laboratory i3N, the Institute of Nanostructures, Nanomodeling and Nanofabrication; President of the administration board of the Portuguese cluster in Advanced Materials (NANOMAT); member of the administration board of the Portuguese cluster on Batteries (BatPower); Chair of the European Committee on Affairs of the European Materials Research Society. He is a member of the Academia Europaea; the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona; Portuguese Academy of Engineering; European Academy of Sciences; the Portuguese Order of Engineers, OE, and of the Board of Admission and Qualification of OE. Former: President of the International Union of Materials Research Society - IUMRS; member of the Scientific Council of the European Research Council; member of the Advisory Council of DG Prosperity in the frame of European Programme Horizon (2014-2016). Coordinator of the Emerging Printed Electronics Research Infrastructure (EMERGE), the first in Europe beyond Silicon.
He got more than 25 distinctions and awards, such as Professor Honoris Causa by the University of Gala, Romania, the Chinese Government Friendship Award 2025, among others. In 2021, he got the Career and Recognition Award given by the Portuguese Society of Materials and the Research Nova-Altice Award. He is the editor-in-chief of the journal Discover Materials. Member of the international committee of ITC2025. Member of the advisory board (2025-2027) of the European University for Customised Education (EUNICE), Member of the editorial board of the journal Innovation Material (2025-2027).
